Automatic Street Light Control System

    Time Switch For Street Light

As street lights need to be turned on and off regularly, they are usually controlled by time switches, people often called it street light control system. A street light with a time switch control system will improve energy efficiency in the long run, extend the service lifetime, and finally bring people excellent using experience.

Alion has provided customized time & light control solutions for more than 500+ projects around the world. We can offer custom time switch solutions according to your specifications – from idea generation to final serial production.

How the time switch works to control the street light

Street lights are basically turned on or off together in a district or a street, and they are usually controlled by a master switch.

However, time-controlled switches cannot directly control high-power electrical appliances. When the power of the electrical appliance exceeds 400W, you need to install an AC modular contactor.

That is to say, we use the time switch to control the AC modular contactor, and the AC modular contactor control the main switch of the street light.

    Common Timer Switch Wiring Methods

    Direct Control Wiring

When the electrical appliance to be controlled is a single-phase power supply, and the power consumption does not exceed the rated value of the switch (resistive load does not exceed 25A, the inductive load does not exceed 20A), we can use the direct control wiring method.

    Single-phase Wiring

When the controlled appliance is single-phase power supply, but the power consumption exceeds the rated capacity of the switch (resistive load exceeds 25A, inductive load exceeds 20A), we need one AC modular contactor with a capacity exceeding the power consumption of the appliance to expand the capacity.

    Three-phase Wiring

The controlled electrical appliance needs a three-phase power supply and an external three-phase AC contactor. The coil voltage of the control contactor is AC220V, 50Hz. The coil voltage of the control contactor is AC380V, 50Hz.

Timer Switch for Street Lights Connections

    1. Connect the air switch and the time control switch

    2. Connect the air switch to the AC contactor, and connect the fire-neutral wire of the air switch to L1 and L2 of the AC contactor.

    3. Connect the time control switch and the AC modular contactor, and connect the fire zero wire of the time switch to A1 and A2 of the AC contactor.

    4. Connect the wires of the main street light switch and the AC contactor, and the fire neutral wire of the main street light switch receives the T1 and T2 of the AC contactor.

Automatic Street Light Control System FAQ

It depends on the function of street light, some street lights just need the lighting and timer function, time switch can solve this problem. But in some municipal projects, street light system often needs to match a monitoring system, then it will need more components to achieve this function. If clients have some special requirements for your street light system, it often need to custom their own timer switches, you should consult your light time switch manufacturer.

In some municipal engineering projects, they not only need to control the street light remote, but also need to monitor the working condition of each street lamp. The whole automatic street light system includes several component, the time swicth is just only one of them. If you need some compalicated time swicth solution for street light, you need to contact your time switch supplier for further customization.

There is a photo sensor switch on these streetlights, which consists of a sealed CDS photocell and a Snap-action bimetallic relay. The streetlights with a photo sensor switch can automatically turn on or off the lighting according to the light intensity changes.

Yes, the astronomical time switch automatically turns ON/OFF at the preset longitude and latitude, time zone. You don’t need to adjust your timer to keep up with changing sunrise/sunset times.

In most cases, the solar street light just supports light control. But it can be designed for light control or time control, it all depends on your needs.

How to Set Time Switch For Street Light

Before you set your time switch, make sure that the street lights and switches are working. As different functions of time switch require different setting methods, here we just show you the basic setting steps. More functions you can check the manual of time switch.

    1) Turn the light switch to the “on” position, and plug the light timer into the wall outlet.

    2) Set the display time (present time), it usually aligns the arrow in the center with the corresponding time of day. Here is the setting method of Alion time switch:

    3) Set your timer switch to “auto”, it has at least two settings: “on” and “auto.”

    4) Position the tabs on the outer edge of the light timer to correspond to the time you want the light to turn off and on. The pulled-up label indicates that you want the light to be off, while the depressed label indicates that the light should be on.

    5) Test your settings by rotating the time dial until it reaches a pull-up label and the indicator light should be off. It means the timer is set correctly, please don’t forget to dial the time back to the correct current time
