What Is a Timer Relay?

Now, the basic function of a timer relay is to control the flow of electricity. You can control the electricity flow by presetting the time you want. Some of the settings on a timer relay are:

– Delayed start
– Delayed stop
– Pulse delay relays
– Cycle controls.

Some timer relays also have shock-absorbing mechanisms. When the coils are energized or de-energized, the mechanisms, which are attached to the armature, will prevent immediate, full motions. The addition of a shock-absorbing mechanism is what gives the relays a time-delaying function.

A timer relay has applications in commercial, industrial, and residential projects. Also, they are pretty easy to set up and install, and you won’t need a lot of tools to do it.

Types of Timer Relays

When looking at timer relays, there are two types you can choose from — mechanical and digital. Both are precise, durable, and reliable. In fact, the biggest difference between the two is their design.

For example, a digital timer relay has an LED display, while the mechanical one has clock hands. Also, there’s a difference in how you preset the time. Most mechanical relays have a dial near the display, unlike the digital, which has a push wheel.

Mechanical timer relays also have different time ranges. They can have anywhere from 15 to 18 ranges that go from 0.1 seconds to 30 hours.

Applications of Timer Relays

No matter which type of relay you decide to go for,  the applications are almost endless. The most common use for timer relays is flashing lights control. You can use two timer delay relays to provide a constant frequency. Then, you can send the on/off pulsing contact to power your lamp, for example.

You can also use a timer relay for a conveyor belt sequence delay. If you need to start your belt in a reverse sequence to avoid your products piling up, you should use a timer relay. What’s more, you can also use it if you need your conveyor belts to work at different speeds.
